Joan Pranata Bogart is an artist drawing inspiration from nature and culture. Botanical and ocean prints carved from linoleum blocks are inspired by the motif of Indonesian Batik, an intricate hand designed textile made from wax resist printing. Her parents are from Indonesia but she grew up in Southern California, moving around the Bay Area since graduating from University of California, Berkeley. Following a BA in Art Practice she worked in online advertising at Google for over a decade, and she illustrated on the side. Her early career illustrations mostly consisted of classical botanical pencil renderings, and you can find them on the labels of La Tourangelle gourmet oils.
Printmaking with her kids in 2018 in their classes was a catalyst for Joan’s self-taught practice of linocut and relief printing, as it took her drawing skill and evolved it into a tactile fashion. Joan renders prints by hand, sometimes burnishing with a baren, and sometimes with a tension load printing press.
Joan practices her craft in her home art studio while raising three children and her pup Willow with her husband in Santa Cruz, CA. When she's not printmaking or volunteering at her childrens' schools, and loves to mountain bike the Santa Cruz Mountains and living an active lifestyle.
In 2021 Joan was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. It was in the middle of the COVID pandemic and she had already taken a break from printmaking to help three kids at home doing distance learning. So she then balanced doctors appointments, research, prioritizing health and exercise. Through her diagnosis and recovery from double mastectomy, Joan carved the 'Tatas Print', which she sold in print and bandana format. All profits were donated to BCRF (Breast Cancer Reasearch Foundation) and Camp Kesem (camp for children whose parents had/have cancer). Joan is a breast cancer advocate, especially through her own recovery. She is doing well and taking medications to reduce her cancer recurrence.
In 2026 she launched The Good Send linoprint snail mail club, a complimentary and fun way to appreciate art and encourage
connection between friends.
